ToggleGBOMBS is an acronym coined by Dr. Joel Fuhrman to represent six of the most nutrient-dense, disease-fighting, superfoods: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds. These spcialforce foods are powerful allies in preventing chronic diseases, boosting the immune system, maintaining strength, and promoting longevity. And who doesnt want to live as long as possible? Apparantly not many. Though the term is coined by Dr.Furman, I was introduced to the GBOMBS by the legendary Nathanial Jordan, aka The Minster of Welness, who is an exponent of the GBOMBS LIVE-IT (Not DIEt), because its not about short-term fixes, its about long term health and quality of life. As beneficial as this protocol may be, it has long since been forgotten about over the past few years. Due to it being drowned out by other sub-niches in veganism that garner more likes and engagement on the internet, such as alakine-ism/herbalism, fruitarianism, or even breatharianism (for the real psychos out there). But, as these niches prove over the years to be unsustainable “for most” (despite their immediate benefits that appeal to our lazy society) to cover all facets of manhood for the remainder of life; it will come a point in the future (mark these words) that all roads will lead back to the Whole Food Plant-Based Vegan lifestyle. And understanding and utilizing GBOMBS protocol can be a game-changer for muscle growth, detoxification, sexual health, and longevity, All of which should be key areas of your focus as a Black Man. Below is a breakdown of how each food group in GBOMBS contributes to your health goals. Should the GBOMBS make a comeback? Continue reading and make an informed decision for yourself.
Dark leafy greens like collards, kale, watercress, and arugula are nutritional powerhouses, loaded with sulforaphane, a compound that detoxifies excess estrogen and toxins from the liver, ensuring optimal testosterone levels. High nitrate content in greens converts to nitric oxide, expanding blood vessels and enhancing circulation, key for blood pressure control, heart health, and better erections. Magnesium, found abundantly in greens, helps regulate cortisol, reducing stress and preventing muscle breakdown. The chlorophyll content deeply cleanses the blood, keeping inflammation low and preventing chronic diseases like hypertension, which affects 40% of Black men. Consuming greens daily is a non-negotiable for longevity, muscle recovery, and optimal male health.
Black men are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes, but beans offer the perfect defense. Rich in resistant starch and fiber, they stabilize blood sugar levels, prevent insulin resistance, and promote fat loss, all without the energy crashes caused by processed carbs. Beans are also high in arginine, an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide production, improving blood circulation and cardiovascular health. Zinc, magnesium, and iron in beans help support testosterone levels and muscle recovery, making them a critical post-workout food. The high protein content fuels muscle-building without the inflammation that comes from processed vegan protein sources or animal-based proteins. For sustained energy, lean muscle, and disease prevention, beans should be a staple in every Black man’s diet.
Onions are one of the most underrated superfoods for male health. Rich in quercetin, onions have been proven to increase testosterone by up to 300% in studies, making them a natural alternative to hormone therapy. Their sulfur compounds detoxify the body and improve liver function, ensuring excess estrogen and toxins don’t accumulate and lower T-levels. Onions are also vasodilators, improving blood flow to muscles, the brain, and erections for optimal bedroom performance. A diet rich in onions significantly lowers blood pressure, improves sperm quality, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer, a disease that disproportionately affects Black men. If you want better endurance, stronger erections, and a more resilient body, onions should be a daily essential.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among Black men, and mushrooms are one of the most powerful defenses against it. Beta-glucans and ergothioneine found in mushrooms activate immune cells, helping the body destroy cancerous cells before they become a problem. Reishi and chaga mushrooms are adaptogens, reducing stress and lowering cortisol, which is key for maintaining muscle mass and testosterone. Lion’s Mane mushrooms are particularly beneficial for brain health, stimulating nerve growth factor (NGF) to prevent cognitive decline and improve memory, focus, and learning ability. Mushrooms also contain compounds that block excess estrogen, making them a crucial food for hormonal balance and longevity. If you want to stay sharp, strong, and disease-free, mushrooms need to be in your diet.
Black men experience higher rates of hypertension and heart disease, and berries provide a powerful shield against both. Rich in anthocyanins, the pigments that give them their deep color, berries protect blood vessels, lower inflammation, and improve circulation. This makes them essential for erectile function, heart health, and muscle recovery. Studies show that men who consume berries regularly have a 32% lower risk of heart disease, and they’re also linked to improved cognitive function and memory retention. The low glycemic index of berries helps regulate blood sugar, preventing the energy crashes and fat gain associated with processed sugars. If you want better stamina, sharper focus, and a more youthful body, make berries a daily habit.
Seeds are nature’s testosterone boosters, packed with zinc, magnesium, and omega-3s: All critical for muscle recovery, fat loss, and sexual health. Pumpkin seeds are one of the best sources of zinc, an essential mineral that prevents testosterone depletion and boosts sperm quality and libido. Flaxseeds and chia seeds provide lignans, compounds that block excess estrogen, ensuring that your T-levels stay high and your body stays lean. Hemp seeds contain a complete protein profile, making them an excellent muscle-building food for Black men looking to stay strong without relying on synthetic protein powders. The healthy fats in seeds also improve joint health, brain function, and endurance, ensuring you stay on top of your game in the gym, at work, and in the bedroom.
Black men who eat deal animal flesh face higher risks of chronic disease, lower life expectancy, and more preventable health issues than any other demographic in America. Studies show that 40% of Black men over 20 have high blood pressure, and we are twice as likely to develop diabetes as white men. Prostate cancer, heart disease, obesity, and, worst of all, erectile dysfunction are taking too many of us out before we reach our prime. The worst part? It’s easily preventable. And if you dont know, the only cure to chronic disease, is prevention.
The GBOMBS protocol is the epitome of whole foods plant based. You dont have to eat all 6 GBOMBS everyday. You can incorperate the GBOMBS individually in various recipies (examples below). Eating one huge salad is the best way to incorprate all 6 GBOMBS in one sitting. Or some days you might be feeling just a Bean Soup. One of my personal favorite go to meals that incorprate the protocol is a Buddha bowl, containing quinoa (seeds) and lentils as the base (beans), steamed broccoli and spinach (Greens), but no onions or berries, but will complete it with tofu and sweet potato, which aren’t GBOMBS, but they still present their own benefits outside of the GBOMBS.
While you always want to utilize the GBOMBS in most recipies, you still have to eat the wide variety of other plant foods along with them in order to sustain the vegan life style. And also, it is very beneficial to go some days without eating at all, or only eating fruit to ease up on your digestive system. And most importantly, a diligent exercise routine will enhance the absorbtion, utilization, and effectiveness of all of the nutrients you consume. The GBOMBS is not here to limit what you eat as a vegan. It is here to enhance your nutrient profile, and provide a protocol for those who are locked in on an exercise routine, or want to help black men prevent or get rid of a chronic disease that ails them.
The key to reversing disease, maximizing strength, and increasing longevity is in our diet. If you want to walk around with lean muscle, be able to have a better sex life, and live a longer, more quality life, then eat the GBOMBS: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds! The blueprint for a healthier, stronger, and disease-free Black man!
